Jason Plays Keyboard     back to rollingball home

My son ands daughter-in-law, Joshua and Penny, gave me a two-hour recording session as a birthday present.

The studio is Martin Buff's The Piano Studio, in Seattle. Martin has a lovely recording setup with a Steinway D.

I tuned the piano on a January Monday, and recorded these pieces on the Friday of that week.

This tuning is a "P12" (Perfect Twelfth), which is a tuning style of increasing interest among piano tuners. It's a way of matching the mathematics to the actual inharmonicity of the piano. More about that elsewhere.

In most of these pieces, I'm playing more slowly than one might expect. I'm listening to the tuning. You listen too. It's sweet. A couple of the unisons have drifted, and it's hard to play that piano softly, but I do like the P12 sound.

I studied classical piano from 1958 to 63, and then 3 years of jazz with John Mehegan, for Juilliard credit though I only went to Mehegan's apartment in the Village. He had two grands, nested so we could see each other through the crossed lids. Great teacher.

Hallelujah
I love how plaintive this is.
Can't Help Falling
Prepared this for Kelly Ferguson's wedding to Cassandra Dupree.
Over the Rainbow
Inspired by Keith Jarrett. I once told my mother that I'd die happy if I could play like him.
Let It Be
The Beatles were so brilliant. The chord structures of their songs, and Paul's bass, and John's piercing mind, and George's chords and solos.
My Funny Valentine
Jo so loved this song.
Louie
I actually wrote this as a college freshman and have nurtured it all these years. It never had a name until Louie died. Let us remember Louie while listening to this. Sweet fella.
Imagine
I don't know ... what do you think?
Autumn Leaves
This one is my least favorite of the bunch, because my technique is so sloppy. The chords are nice, though. I was growing tired. But this was one of the very first pieces I worked on with John Merhegan.
